Airport rail: the train that only runs in election years -- Bandt

The Greens have welcomed reported moves by the federal and state governments to consider funding a Melbourne Airport rail link, but said the money needs to start flowing immediately so that this doesn’t continue to be the train that only runs during election years.

Greens MP for Melbourne, Adam Bandt, said:

“It seems the airport train only ever runs during election years.

“It seems the airport train only ever runs during election years.

“People know this train makes sense, but the old parties are so fearful of the toll-road corporations that they run it up the flagpole during election campaigns but never do anything when in government.

“If governments are now serious about funding and building a properly-routed airport rail link, that’s great news, but the money needs to start flowing well before we enter the next round of elections.

“Despite Labor promising big on public transport, all we’ve got for the airport since the last election has been a new lane on the Tulla, which is like trying to cure obesity by loosening your belt.”
