Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said that instead of considering a raise to the GST, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his cabinet must start at the top with tax reform.

“Malcolm Turnbull declared that ‘fairness is absolutely critical’ when it comes to tax reform, yet he continues to turn a blind eye to unfair tax breaks,” Mr Bandt said.

“Any rise to the GST will hit the poorest hardest.”

“How can Malcolm Turnbull’s cabinet consider increasing the GST, when the public hands out billions of dollars a year for the likes of Gina Rinehart to buy cheaper diesel?”

“Tax reform must start at the top, not the bottom.”

“We should be ending unfair tax breaks and closing loopholes in our tax system that are exploited by the most wealthy, not lifting the cost of almost everything that people buy.”

“The Greens will fight any unfair move to increase the GST.”
