Energy Ministers must act on power industry gaming: Bandt
A new report on the how the power industry is gaming the electricity market reinforces the need for action by energy Ministers, said Greens energy spokesperson, Adam Bandt MP, today.
The report by the Melbourne Energy Institute and released by the Australian Conservation Foundation today also undermines the false claims that renewables are to blame for recent spikes in South Australian electricity prices.
“This report shows we need more renewables, not less, because distributed wind and solar generation increases competition and undermines the fossil fuel monopoly that enables gaming of the electricity market,” Mr Bandt said.
“This is further evidence that the energy Ministers need to act at their upcoming meeting. The days of state and federal government’s taking a 'hands off' approach to the electricity market must end. We need a planned redevelopment of the grid and market that enables increased connections between states, investment in storage and more renewables.”
