Australian Greens Leader, Christine Milne, today welcomed Adam Bandt’s election as Deputy Leader of the Greens.

“I'm delighted that Adam is to take on this important role and I'm really looking forward to working together with him as well as our whole party room,” Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

“We're a great team for the city and the bush.

“One of our great strengths is the depth of talent in our parliamentary team. They all bring their own passions and strengths and make a fantastic political force.

"Adam has a tremendous grasp of the issues confronting Australia and I know he shares my passion to start a national conversation about what an Australian society values and wants to promote as we face the challenges of the century.

"Adam’s work in the seat of Melbourne exemplifies this, as does his Work Life Balance bill, for example, which is currently before the House."

Adam Bandt said “I am grateful for the support of my Parliamentary colleagues and I look forward to working with Christine Milne in providing stable leadership in this new phase in the growth of our party.

“It will be a privilege and honour to work as deputy leader and support Senator Milne's vision, integrity and experience in minority government.

“I believe this decision also reinforces the Australian Greens’ role as the third force of politics with leadership now in both Houses of Parliament.

“We are ready to tackle the challenges of the future and we will continue to be the centre for innovation in the Australian Parliament.

“I want to pay tribute to Bob Brown for his years of service to the party and the nation. His life has been truly heroic and I know he will continue to surprise us and inspire us in the years ahead."
