Greens Deputy Leader and Federal Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt MP has called on Labor to work with the Greens to “Abbott-proof” the $3 billion in funding for Melbourne Metro announced last night.

Mr Bandt’s  Infrastructure (Priority Funding) Amendment Bill 2013 amends the Infrastructure Australia Act 2008 to require the Commonwealth to prioritise federal funding of rail projects already on the National Priority List, such as the Melbourne Metro, ahead of any new major metropolitan road projects such as the East West tunnel.

“I welcome the government’s decision to fund the Melbourne Metro,” Mr Bandt said.

“This is a big win for my electorate of Melbourne and something we have all been working for, but it will come to nothing if an Abbott government funds the East West tollway instead.”

“Labor must work with the Greens to Abbott-proof the Melbourne Metro.”

“There is a lot of talk about “time-bombs”, “booby traps” and “locking in Tony Abbott.” I want to lock Tony Abbott in to funding the Melbourne Metro.”

“Tony Abbott has said he will not fund the Melbourne Metro but will tip in $1.5 billion into the East West Tollway. My bill, if supported by the Parliament, will ensure no Federal money can be spent on the tollway unless the Melbourne Metro is funded first.”

“Melbourne Metro is a key part of the Greens transport strategy for Melbourne, which also includes Doncaster Rail, expanded east-west bus and tram routes and improved train and tram timetabling.”
