Government poked in eye by States on NEG

Greens climate and energy spokesperson, Adam Bandt MP, has welcomed the refusal by the State governments to support the National Energy Guarantee today.

Mr Bandt said the Greens would also continue with a motion in the Senate to force the release of the full NEG modelling ahead of the Coalition Party room.

“The State Premiers are hopefully realising the NEG is a dud,” said Mr Bandt.

“The ball is now in the Turnbull government’s court. The Liberals now need to go back to the drawing board and abandon their plans to prop up coal and halt the clean energy boom.

“It will be untenable for Victoria and the other states to sign on if the government goes ahead with its plan for a coal slush fund, as floated by the ACCC.

“Daniel Andrews will be crucified at the next election in inner Melbourne if he agrees to a NEG package that includes money for coal but not renewables.

“The Premiers will betray their States if they fail to stare down the government and kill off the government’s renewable-destroying NEG plan.”
