Government pulls down veil of secrecy on taxes paid by their big business mates
Greens treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said the government has scratched the back of its big business mates by hiding how much tax they pay. The Tax and Superannuation Laws Amendment (Better Targeting the Income Tax Transparency Laws) Bill 2015 passed the Senate this afternoon.
“The government has scratched the back of its big business mates by bringing down a veil of secrecy over the tax paid, or not paid, by some of the country’s most profitable companies,” Mr Bandt said.
“By removing this transparency from our tax laws, the government has made it easier for companies to avoid paying their fair share of tax.”
“The notion that the bosses of these private companies were at risk of kidnapping is ridiculous. The AFP confirmed they never gave Treasury any advice to that effect.”
“Every justification for this law was exposed as not being based in evidence. It’s a huge step backward in the fight against corporate tax avoidance.”
