Last chance to insulate workers from Abbott: Bandt
Greens Deputy Leader and workplace relations spokesperson, Adam Bandt MP, has urged Labor to move beyond rhetoric and enshrine real protections for Australian workers in law in case an Abbott government is elected in September.
"There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to insulate Australian workers from a potential Abbott government," said Mr Bandt.
"The Prime Minister's announcement to legislate on penalty rates is a step in the right direction, but like many Labor announcements, the law may not match the promise."
"Penalty rates should be a legal minimum standard for every worker, not simply left to the Fair Work Commission to put in awards on a case-by-case basis. We'll see how ambitious Labor is prepared to be when a bill finally surfaces."
"The Greens will also amend the government's bill to give people enforceable rights to a better work/life balance and greater job security."
