Abbott needs to do more on Paid Parental leave - Greens

Any Abbott government paid parental leave scheme must be fully funded by big business, the Australian Greens said today.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne said big questions remained over the funding of the scheme as proposed by Tony Abbott.

“Any scheme needs to be fair, affordable and legislated as a workplace right. The scheme would also need to be fully funded by big business, not budget cuts,” Senator Milne said.

Tunnel vision on toll road no one wants: Bandt

Greens Deputy Leader and Melbourne MP Adam Bandt said that Tony Abbott finding another billion dollars for the  proposed East-West toll road shows that the ‘Budget emergency’ is a sham.

“The so-called ‘budget emergency’ is a sham,” said Mr Bandt.

“Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey say they can’t find enough money for pensioners and might have to put a levy on taxpayers, but there’s another $1bn for a polluting toll road Victorians don’t want.

Big four banks must make 'corporate social responsibility' a reality: Bandt

Responding to allegations that the big four banks were underwriting land-grabs in the developing world, Greens Deputy Leader and Finance spokesperson said that the banks need to live up to their pledges of corporate social responsibility and refuse to fund activities that hurt people or the environment.
 
“Australia’s ‘big four’ banks each make much of their corporate social responsibility,” said Mr Bandt.
 
"Rhetoric about corporate social responsibility is all well and good but the test is living by those ideals as they conduct day to day business.

Joint strike fighter $14bn leap of faith: Bandt

Greens Acting Leader Adam Bandt today said that Tony Abbott’s plan to spend close to $14 billion on 58 plagued joint strike fighter jets was a poor use of taxpayer funds at a time of supposed Budget restraint.

“Tony Abbott’s priority should be pensions not poorly performing planes,” said Mr Bandt.

“Tony Abbott is taking us on a $14bn leap of faith. So much for the Budget emergency.

Raising minimum wage reduces inequality, stimulates economy

Greens Deputy Leader and Employment spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said that the Fair Work Commission has a chance to act on income inequality.

“The IMF, the OECD, the World Economic Forum and Australia’s Treasury have all made clear that tackling growing income inequality should be a high priority for policy makers because it poses a real risk to growth, prosperity and political stability,” said Mr Bandt.

“The Fair Work Commission has the opportunity before it to tackle one of the most worrying risks to our prosperity, that of growing income inequality.

Free-trade deal could hit employment rate, manufacturing & national revenue: Greens

Greens Deputy Leader and Industry spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said that if Tony Abbott’s China trade deal allows the importation of overseas workers, it could be a body-blow to our employment rate.

Reports today suggest Tony Abbott is considering allowing overseas investors freer access to Chinese-backed projects in Australia as part of the forthcoming Chinese free trade deal.

“What’s the point of these trade deals if the investments that they generate don’t create jobs in Australia?,” said Mr Bandt.

“If Tony Abbott’s Commission of Audit is a front for cuts to CSIRO’s budget of 15-20%, as CSIRO believes, Australia’s prosperity will suffer,” said Mr Bandt.

“Australia depends on research and research depends on secure, long-term funding.

Major boost for east coast high-speed rail

Greens Deputy Leader and HSR spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said a new report has given added impetus to East Coast high-speed rail (HSR).

“The Greens would build high-speed rail along Australia’s east coast. The case is already too compelling not to. Today’s high-level report makes it more so,” said Mr Bandt.

“The report by Beyond Zero Emissions, the German Aerospace Centre and the University of Melbourne makes clear the myriad advantages HSR would bring to the majority of Australians who live along the east coast.

“Mr Pyne appears to be suffering a case of cognitive dissonance,” said Mr Bandt.

“He is talking up our universities and says that he backs the Universities Australia ‘Keep It Clever’ campaign but at the same time the Abbott Government is lining up higher education and research for funding cuts.
