Adam moves to protect science and research funding

The Labor government today refused to allow a vote on a motion moved by the Greens and supported by the Coalition to protect science and research funding.

The motion, moved by Greens Deputy Leader, Adam Bandt, and seconded by Liberal MP, Kelly O’Dwyer, was expected to be voted on today, but didn’t appear on the morning’s notice paper.

The motion called on the Treasurer to secure ARC, NHMRC and other research funding from further budget cuts. Labor cut universities’ research funding by half a billion dollars in the mid-year budget.

Parliament voted 74-66 to allow a final vote on the motion, indicating clear support. However, Standing Orders provide that an absolute majority of 76 is required to suspend usual business to proceed to a vote.

“I want to thanks the cross-bench and the Coalition for supporting my motion. The government should not be able to avoid a vote on an important issue such as science funding simply by not listing the motion for a vote.”

“While we were not able to consider the motion today, I am satisfied that the government has got a clear message.”

“I will continue to campaign for the protection of science and research funding, particularly health and medical research, in the upcoming Budget.”

This week, like thousands of people in our wealthy nation, I will be trying to survive on $246.30.  This is the Newstart Challenge. Follow my progress here
