Only Greens Can Save Melbourne From East-West Disaster: Bandt
Greens Deputy Leader and Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt MP condemned the decision of State Planning Minister, Matthew Guy MP, to spend billions on the flawed East-West tollway.
"Public transport will be the first casualty of Minister Guy's go-ahead for East-West, as the tollway will be a disastrous drain on the public purse,” said Mr Bandt.
“Given Labor will build the tollway as long as the Liberals sign the contracts first, the only thing that can stop it is voting Greens at the Victorian election in November."
"If the tollway goes ahead, there will be no money left for the public transport projects being wildly promised by Labor and the Liberals."
“The billions of taxpayer dollars slated for this Liberal Party road building project should be invested in public transport that will breathe life, liveability and long-term accessibility into the city centre, the opposite of what the toll road would do.”
“The fantastic and widespread community action against this toll road has at least meant that some of Royal Park has been saved, but others are now in the firing line."
“If the Napthine Government cared what people think, it would defer signing contracts until after an assessment of the revised design's full impact, including on residents in Kensington and near Flemington Road."
"Labor must now commit to tearing up any contracts if they win majority government in November,” said Mr Bandt.
