Greens welcome clean energy blueprint
Greens Energy and Climate spokesperson Adam Bandt MP has welcomed the release of a clean energy blueprint by the Energy Transition Leadership forum.
The Our Energy Future: A plan to transition Australia to clean energy needs proposes key reforms, including changes to energy laws to include pollution reduction as an objective and a plan for the orderly retirement of coal fired power stations.
“The clean energy blueprint released by business and society leaders reinforces the need for action from the government to drive the transition to clean energy,” Mr Bandt said.
“The government can no longer leave the inevitable transition to clean energy to the chaos of the market. The Prime Minister must join with Energy Ministers and put in place a plan to drive the transition.”
“A plan for the orderly retirement of coal-fired power stations is the critical first step and must be put in place at the December Energy Ministers’ meeting.”
A Senate inquiry, initiated by the Greens, is currently examining proposals for the early retirement of coal-fired stations and a just transition for workers and affected communities. The first public hearings are on Wednesday in Canberra.
