New poll shows Australians back marriage equality: Bandt
Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt says he will push ahead for a vote on his Marriage Equality Bill next week as a new national poll backs marriage equality.
A new Roy Morgan Poll shows 65% of Australian electors support same-sex marriage compared to 35% that don’t support it. Clear support is evident across all States and is higher amongst Women (70% support gay marriage) than Men (59% support gay marriage).
An overwhelming majority of Australians (79%) believe Members of Parliament (MPs) should be allowed a conscience vote on the issue compared to only 15% who say MPs should not be allowed a conscience vote and 6% who can’t say.
Mr Bandt will move at the House of Representatives selection committee this afternoon for a vote on June 6
“I welcome this latest poll which shows the overwhelming support for a conscience vote on marriage equality. I hope Labor won’t try and stand in the way of a vote next week. Tony Abbott needs to listen to Australians and allow a conscience vote”, Mr Bandt said.
