Labor’s gas plan is a climate bomb that’s worse than Adani: Greens

Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today warned that if Labor’s plan to spend $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars to frack Australia’s northern gas fields goes ahead, we can kiss our Paris commitments goodbye. Mr Bandt also foreshadowed that the Greens would push to turf the Coalition out, but would make stopping Labor’s gas plan a core campaign focus over the next three years of a Shorten Government.

Greens to mandate carbon risk reporting for large companies

Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP and Greens treasury spokesperson Senator Peter Whish-Wilson today launched a new Greens policy to introduce mandatory carbon risk reporting for Australia’s biggest companies, and to make directors responsible for managing carbon risk. Mr Bandt said that corporate sector is paralysed because of the perceived risks of ‘moving first’, which means the government has to step in to implement a regulatory framework that will force the corporate sector to act.

“Smart companies know that the dangers of climate change are clear and present. Smart investors are asking tough questions about exposure to carbon risk. And financial regulators are waving the red flag,” said Mr Bandt.

Bandt announces Greens push for Future of Work Commission

Greens Deputy Leader and industrial relations spokesperson Adam Bandt MP has today used an address to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to announce that the Greens will establish an independent Future of Work Commission, charged with ensuring technology and automation improve people's lives and job security, rather than creating more insecure work.

Mr Bandt noted that the Greens have already announced several policies to address insecure work, casualisation, underpayment and job flexibility, but broad, structural changes to the law may be required so that technological change doesn't just entrench already high corporate profits and power.

Casual conversion push welcome but overdue & Greens will amend in Senate: Bandt

Casual conversion push welcome but overdue & Greens will amend in Senate: Bandt

Greens employment spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today welcomed Labor’s adoption of Greens policy on casual conversion, but noted that casuals could have had the right to convert to permanent employment seven years ago, when Mr. Bandt introduced a bill in 2012 to enable casual and rolling contract employees to request a secure employment arrangement from their employer.

Mr Bandt said the Greens will move in the Senate to expand Labor’s bill so that it applies to workers on repeated short-term contracts and so that decisions of the Fair Work Commission can apply across workplaces and industries, not just to individual employees requesting conversion.

Labor dishes up dog's breakfast of Liberal leftovers on climate

Labor dishes up dog's breakfast of Liberal leftovers on climate

Greens’ climate change spokesperson and Co-Deputy Leader, Adam Bandt, said that Labor’s climate announcement today was a jumble of Liberal party ideas without any plan to transition out of thermal coal. Mr Bandt also said his party would oppose the ‘fake action’ of international offsets contained in Labor’s plan. The Greens will work to kick Scott Morrison’s government out but then toughen up Labor’s proposals in the Senate.

“There are a couple of good ideas here, but overall this is a dog’s breakfast of Liberal party leftovers, with no plan for coal and no hope of meeting the Paris Agreement goals,” said Mr Bandt.
