Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP said the flat-tax proposal for income tax floated by Liberals MP Dan Tehan today is a throwback to Joh Bjelke-Petersen that would increase inequality in Australia.

“Today we hear that the Turnbull government is considering swinging a wrecking ball through our progressive tax system by instating a flat-tax,” Mr Bandt said.

“Liberal MPs are dredging up Neanderthal ideas of conservative thought that belong squarely in the past.”

“This shows the real agenda behind the Liberals’ tax reform agenda is to widen the gap between the rich and the poor.”

“Tax reform should start at the top, not the bottom.”

“The Greens will oppose any move that would make our tax system less fair.”
