Labor retreat on Renewable Energy Target a complete betrayal: Bandt
Responding to Labor Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Mark Butler’s announcement on Radio National this morning that Labor would no longer support a continuing Renewable Energy Target, Greens Climate Change & Energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today accused Labor of cowardice.
“It seems Labor has waved the white flag in Turnbull’s war on renewables. Labor’s retreat on the Renewable Energy Target is a betrayal on climate change and a betrayal of clean energy,” Mr Bandt said.
“This is incredible cowardice from Labor. Instead of fighting for clean energy, they are capitulating to the Coalition.”
“Investment is being held back because of the lack of clear long-term policy on renewables.”
“Yes, we need a mechanism for planned retirement of coal-fired power stations. But we also need a clear renewable energy target beyond 2020 that brings on new clean energy to replace retiring fossil fuel generators.”
“Unfortunately, Labor has form on attacking the Renewable Energy Target, previously combining with the Abbott government to cut the target by 20%.”
