Greens push to stop climate ‘carryover credit’ accounting trick
Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today announced the Greens will introduce and seek support for a bill in the Senate that will prohibit the Commonwealth from using the dodgy ‘Kyoto carryover’ credits to meet their paltry Paris Agreement commitments.
Mr Bandt called on Labor to clarify their position and join with the Greens to stop the government from cooking the books by passing legislation in the final days of this Parliament.
“If Labor works with us, we can stop the government using this dirty accounting trick that will make global warming worse,” said Mr Bandt.
“By cooking the books, you’re cooking the planet.
“Labor is likely to be in government in a few weeks’ time and they need to make it clear that the Liberals’ dodgy climate credit scam is an accounting trick Labor won’t use.
“If Labor works with us, this bill could become law, just like the medevac bill, and the Liberals’ climate fraud will be exposed. But if Labor sides with the conservatives, their climate credibility will be in tatters.”
