Greens Deputy Leader and Federal Member for Melbourne, Adam Bandt, has called on Labor to bury the East West Tunnel project by vowing not to proceed with it if there is a change of State Government next year and to rule out Federal funding if Kevin Rudd is elected.

Mr Bandt has warned against half-baked election promises from Labor and called on Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews to give an iron-clad guarantee that Labor would not support the tunnel in any circumstances.

"Labor can't make a promise to oppose the tunnel while holding their fingers crossed behind their backs," said Mr Bandt.

"Saying that they'll honour any contracts signed by Dennis Napthine is the same as Labor letting the tunnel go ahead provided the Liberals do the dirty work."

"When it comes to this tunnel, Labor has had more positions than the Kama Sutra."

"The tunnel was Labor Premier John Brumby's idea and various State and Federal Labor MPs have spoken in support of the tunnel. If Mr Andrews wants the community to believe his promises he needs to give an iron-clad guarantee that Labor won't support the project in any circumstances."

"The Greens and the community will continue our campaign against the tunnel until the project is dropped by the State Government."
