"This weekend, Melbourne was looking forward to having people return home and to welcoming international guests and researchers," said Mr Bandt.

"Melbourne has been getting ready for some time for the AIDS 2014 conference, and people will be hit hard.

"Thousands of lives will be touched by this tragedy.

"Any one of us in this country could have been on that plane.

"As the member for Melbourne and on behalf of the Greens, our thoughts today are with everyone touched by this horrible event."

Earlier today, Adam Bandt also addressed Parliament about MH17.
